Free Comic Book Day is a nationwide event which takes place every year on the first Saturday in May – in other words, today! – where comic book specialty stores give away free comics to every customer who shows up.

Of course, not every comic in the store is free – instead, there is a solid batch of original books and reprints that is made available by just about every major publisher. The participants for 2010 include Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, Boom! Studios, Archie Comics, IDW, Drawn & Quarterly, and Dynamite Entertainment.

Find out more information here, but honestly you probably want to get going as soon as you read this, because supplies will be plentiful but limited.

Free Comic Book Day is a great opportunity to see the diversity of the modern crop of comic books, and to get to know the readership, distributors, and creators, who will be in attendance. Here’s one place where you can find the local comic shop nearest to you.

But hey: What are you still doing reading this article? I said “free comics” – the only better offers I can think of at the moment would be free sex, free money, or free oatmeal raisin cookies, and I don’t see any of those things being advertised today. So get going, already!
