East Village Cheese has the finest cheese in town. How do I know? I don’t. But it’s so cheap it makes me sing.

Impressive wedge of brie: $1.50, half pound of herring in wine sauce: $2.50; individual serving of tiramisu pudding, carton of Carr’s crackers, loaf of Balthazar bread, cut of coffee cake, dinner rolls, caviar: Likewise!

East Village Cheese, open seven days a week from 8:30 to 6:30 (6:25?) has the lowest prices on the planet, is conveniently nestled between a barber shop and Duane Reade, across from an NYU dorm, kitty-cornering St. Marks. How does it manage, in environs such as these, to be so inordinately benevolent in price? I don’t know. I’m just a patron.

The things they carry include but are not limited to cheeses from Israel, Norway, France and Chile, to name but a few! There exists a deli counter with fish, meat and condiments galore, a small bakery with many-flavored cakes and pastries. An olive, artichoke heart and marinated pepper bar. I give a hearty condoning grin to the family-size $10 quiches, 99 cent baklava wedges and friendly salespeople. I have nothing in my heart but love. And nothing in my stomach but cheese.
