A genuinely funny movie (in my opinion, as always) is available on DVD as of today. Here’s what I had to say about I Love You, Man when it was first released back in March:
My opinion hasn’t changed, although I’d amend my description of Jason Segel as a “twenty-first-century Judge Reinhold” to specify that he reminds me most directly of Judge Reinhold’s close-talker character from that Seinfeld episode. Jason Segel is that guy who’s up in your grill a little too much, even though he’s consistently likable about it. That’s probably why he keeps getting cast as lovable stalkers (see: Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared, Knocked Up, & Forgetting Sarah Marshall).
Otherwise, I like the movie and can only say nice things about it, and I suggest you do the same. As I hit upon in my original reaction, this movie represents the center of the current Hollywood universe. There is no one currently working in Hollywood comedies that can’t be connected to I Love You, Man within just two degrees. I’m serious! Try it at home.
