The single most popular image on the entire internet today, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly , is the first picture of Scarlett Johansson in full costume with red hair as the superhero Black Widow. The Black Widow is one of several new characters to appear in next year’s Iron Man 2.
For a certain kind of person, this will be one of the most important pictures in two or three decades of onanism.
For others, it won’t mean much at all.
As far as I’m concerned, it only goes to show that Jon Favreau is continuing to get things right as director and head creative figure on this franchise. Scarlett looks great – super-cute, plenty like the character from the comics, and relatively believable, as much as anything can be in transition from comics to film. I think Favreau is one of the most savvy people in Hollywood – it’s a smart and entertaining career he’s got going, and I completely trust him to make the coolest Iron Man sequel possible.
The Black Widow picture comes from this week’s Entertainment Weekly cover story, which is meant to get comic book people amped up for next week’s nerd mecca, the San Diego Comic-Con, where huge comic book movie news is annually expected. I think this picture will get the job done.
The excerpted article also contains some awesome implications for us Mickey Rourke fans – apparently in his role as the villain Whiplash, Rourke will have a pet cockatoo who he will speak to drunkenly during the film. This is the kind of wackadoo that I like to see in my comic book movies, and it makes me think that the Mick and I have seen some of the same movies. Jack Palance once had a similar villain/ pet bird relationship going on in one of his more villainous performances.
I can’t imagine there are going to be naysayers, but then again, there always are. Face it, kids: Iron Man 2 is gonna be a good time.
