Of all the shows hitting the Great White Way this spring season, in long yearn for Tony Awards, there is one which has sparked my interest to abnormal levels. No, it’s not “Promises, Promises.” No, it’s not “The Addams Family.” No, it’s not “Fences,” from the always masterful August Wilson. As a music fan, nothing has caught my attention more than the musical “American Idiot;” the stage adaptation of Green Day’s acclaimed 2004 album.
During our most recent major snowstorm I had matinee tickets to see Time Stands Still at the Friedman Theatre. I was super excited for this show, mostly because of its outstanding cast. I was a little bummed to have tickets during the snowstorm, though, because there were so many other fabulous deals that day because everyone stayed home due to weather.
A few months ago, at Ars Nova’s ANT Fest, I got to see a great performance by the hilarious dance group, Varsity Interpretive Dance Squad (VIDS). The performers in VIDS have one rule that they simplify for the audience early on with the acronym ABCD… Always Be Constantlly Dancing. They announce that if you follow this rule then there is no way you can hit people, hold a gun or press bomb buttons. They then perform dances to popular songs.
The Flea is one of those great off-off Broadway theaters that has such a range of works, you never know if what you're seeing if going to be a major challenge to conventional theater, or something extremely relatable and easy to experience. The latter was the case with a recent play I saw, called Little Gem. It's about three generations of Irish women, all dealing with the various men in their lives and the situations that arise out of those relatio
Ars Nova has been putting on a Showgasm once a month for some time now. It began as part of the ANT Fest and has moved to a regular occurrence. It is a great way to preview upcoming shows and see some pretty amazing performances for FREE… that’s right, FREE!
I went to see Shells at Joe’s Pub a few months ago, but she performs about once a month or so. I had seen her over a year ago with my sister. I was really excited because I won the tickets from Joe’s Pub so they were FREE! I receive weekly emails from Joe’s Pub that tell me the lowdown on what is happening there throughout the week. The email always has a ticket give-away for one of the shows for the week.
Roundabout Theater Company has been putting on a really interesting, eclectic group of shows over the past few months. I was not overly impressed with Bye Bye Birdie, but I loved The Understudy. The company seems to better when it takes on less traditional plays and musicals. I was not disappointed with Wishful Drinking.
I went to see Dream Role at 92Y Tribeca. While I have seen movies at 92Y Tribeca in the past, this was my first theater event there. The space for theater was next to the screening room. There were a lot of tables set up and a bar in back. It was a very welcoming atmosphere. I still love that you can buy food and drink and bring it in to watch the shows. It really is one of my favorite places to go for movies and shows.
I saw Wicked recently. I was psyched to finally get to see the show that I have been hearing so many great reviews about. I have tried to get the cheap rush seats many times and have failed. Last night I sat in the front row of the balcony for $60 a ticket. A friend of mine got a coupon meant for friends of the cast and we took advantage of it.
