Getting Things For Free, Vol. 17: Bagels, Danishes and Fruit for Your Attendance

My mama works for a shadowy cabal of medically-related individuals who sometimes hold meetings in unspecified locations across the country. One such meeting was held uptown last weekend. During breaks, the mysterious practitioners would retire to the lobby and eat from a large spread of bagels, danishes, fruit and coffee. When it was all over, after two long days of indoctrination, I politely asked the man in charge of the food if I could have a few pieces to go.

Getting Things For Free, Vol. 16: Drinks for Your Gyro Purchase

The gyro, shawarma, cheeseburger, fried chicken sandwich and fries place by my house not only serves excellent food for excellent prices, its qualifiedly, respectfully flirtatious young Bangladeshi employees in matching electric green polo shirts are amenable to corruption. For example, if I say can I have a free drink with that? They go sure, why not? This is not the case at the gyro and shawarma cart kitty-cornering my favorite gyro-and-fries place. There, they charge full price, don’t give in to my bartering and never give me anything free.

Getting Things For Free, Vol. 14: Pizza Slice for Your Trivia Participation

I have mentioned pizza before, but by God, I will mention it again, ‘cause don’t nobody not like free pizza. Capisce? I don’t either. Double negatives are hard, but free pizza never is! Participate in a group activity in a public place—trivia in a bar, bocce ball in a backyard, taking notes underground, and YOU TOO may be eligible for a FREE slice of pizza by a generous, moneymaking co-player!

Getting Things For Free, Vol. 13: Quinoa for Your Unpaid Labor

Got me some quinoa in an old plastic container at my old place of employment on my second-to-last day of work. I’m sure it was just the establishment’s way of saying ‘Thank you for sacrificing six months of your life so that we could save money and you could get a balanced set of essential amino acids.’ In other words, if you’re ever an intern or volunteer or slave, you’ll probably be in the running to win some tasty leftover grains. Be an intern today!

Mesa Grill - A True 5 Star Restaurant

Mesa Grill is one of Bobby Flay's restaurants in New York City. My fiance and I were lucky enough to get a reservation on Valentine's Day, granted it wasn't until 9:45 pm, but it was still well worth it. They had a prixe fix menu going on and it looked amazing.

We started off with some drinks at the bar while waiting because we did arrive a little early. They were well made drinks, but pricey, which was to be expected.

Getting Things For Free, Vol. 12: Free Pizza for Your Attraction

You can’t always expect to get free pizza slices from hot chicks/smooth operators/young bucks. But sometimes, just sometimes, if you’re poor and sad, sympathetic and cold, walking together, enjoying the moonlight, the conversation, the promise of a better tomorrow, you can ask or indirectly ask or politely importune or jokily request or be happily, surprisingly gifted with a beautiful, greasy slab of cheese and dough. Free Pizza: Priceless. Hot Pizza Purchaser: Likewise?

The Heartland Brewery

The Heartland Brewery is a chain restaurant here in New York City. I do enjoy it more than any typical chain restaurant though. It has a great variety of beer, which is all specially brewed for the restaurant. It also specializes in different types of food in each location from a Chophouse, Barbecue, and a Burger joint.

The King of Falafel - One of the best places to get falafel and one of the greatest street vendors out there!

One of the best things about this place is that they are always so friendly. We had to wait a little while at one point so they offered us a free falafel sample. They are upbeat and are always working hard. They keep their customers happy and I know I will keep going back.

If you pitch in on a project from 8 pm-3 am and aver how much you care, and aid in the creation of the artworks being crafted and stand loyally by, offering input, electing to help the next day, you will probably be gifted with free Trader Joe’s vegetable chips and a cup or two of Duane Reade organic cranberry juice in a rusted silver chalice. I cannot say it is always this way, but when it is, it is good. Free chips and juice. All you have to do is care!

Getting Things For Free, Vol. 6: Pre-Made Dinner for Your Friendship

Friendship may not cost a thing, but Amy’s Organic Pre-Made dinners do. But what if you have a friend and no dinner, and no money, and no pride? When your friend offers you a full, frozen Amy’s dinner, you don’t say no. Though I’m usually not a fan of Amy’s frozen burritos, enchiladas and other overpriced organic foodstuffs, I am less a fan of spending money. Yesterday my friend offered to put one of her Park Slope Food Coop-bough dinners in the oven for me and it was the best Amy’s dinner I’ve ever had.
