I never do this on a Friday, gathering myself up and head off to a concert or play or anything because I am usually blasted from the week, and Fridays are usually punishing. This Friday I went to a concert to hear Richie Havens at Carnegie Hall. When people get elderly and are still performing I go and it was worth the effort to see him live and hear live music. It was however, the wrong venue, and despite spoiling for box seats, which are actually a rip off , the ambience of the performance was destroyed because I was near the exit door.
Author, poet, musician, ah goddamn it, let just call him what he is - genius, Gil Scott-Heron has released a new album after a 13 year absence, the beautifully ironic - I'm New Here. Already I am going back for another listen to Me and The Devil, New York is Killing Me, Where Did the Night Go and I'll Take Care of You. It is gritty, complex, soulful and raw as the city streets and I am digging it.
Tune in, log on Monday, November 23 at 9:00 - 11:00 pm at 99.5 FM or on the web at www.wbai.org for Chuck D and his new show ANDYOUDONTSTOP! The show according to the host "brings the noise with world beats and issues, missing discussions and inside stories about the music, artists, labels, producers, writers and fanatics of hip hop."
