Same Sex Marriage v Rent Regs
Albany lawmakers are due to close up shop for the summer hols and so this week and next they will be taking care of business. While there was a lot of hue and cry this week about same sex marriage legislation, the piece of legislation that needed attending to as it has a deadline was rent regulation laws. Those sunset today- June 15, without resolution. Republicans will probably agree to pass the laws that exist, Democrats want to strengthen.
The laws protect millions of apartments in the city and 2.5 million New Yorkers through rent control and they have just expired. It has happened before but when this happens lawmakers use it as a tactic to serve the interests of real estate tycoons and landlords to create loopholes in the legislation. If you are paying $2000-3000 you probably wonder why anyone should get away with paying less but most cannot afford high rent and it keeps the city diverse and families get to have some stability.
