Fashion's Night Out: An Itinerary

On September 10th 2009 New York City took part in an epic global move in the fashion industry, Fashion's Night Out. It touched people as individuals and transformed the city for the sake of energizing the economy, in hopes that people would consume and therefore provide the necessary resources for fashion on all levels to exist.

So. We made it to all the places we had in mind to make it. But what’s the score of the game? And we should really celebrate that we made it to everything. And for all the champagne and building up towards the Open Call, someone (or two) certainly needed a well-deserved drink for going through such a feat.

For real, this time. Broadway and Spring. We’ve only got to make it down towards all the scaffolding, almost all the way to Canal. Who’d have thought when we set out for this evening that we’d be heading for an open model call for American Apparel?

Yes, we are approaching Broadway! Finally! And it isn’t midnight yet! Perfect, we’ve got some time, we’ve had some champagne. If only we knew the score of the game.

Burberry. Now, this is one of those stores that when I go shopping (on Broadway that is, but I can’t help but meander towards West Broadway) I usually try to gauge if it’s the perfect timing to slip in and be perfectly ignored without feeling snubbed. And absorb all that plaid. (I know, it's so much more than plaid!) Not to mention that I adore Burberry perfumes.

Chanel. My memory of Chanel resembles memories of art openings at galleries where there’s a wine reception. I took in the art. Even just the store, which I had never been into before (nerves, intimidation, timing) orients itself to a gallery rather than a store. Certain square pods exhibit clothing in a way that includes very few racks to peruse for your size. And there were very few people lounging about trying on shoes.&

Elia Tahari. I love Tahari. Details, details, details. And suits. It all started when I graduated from college and my mom basically took me to Macy’s and picked out all the best suits and pretty much told me to welcome the real world with a good suit.  Preferably Tahari. And lo and behold, it fit.

So. Lately, we’ve been having some outrageously nice weather for March, which happened last year too but after all this snow it’s certainly a tease. Now just rewind in your mind to September, and those first inklings of fall, when the leggings are starting to come out with those summer wedges and jackets…

I went to hear Julie Powell read from her new memoir, Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession, at one of my favorite indie bookstores, McNally Jackson. Julie Powell was shockingly down-to-earth for someone who wrote a bestselling memoir, Julie and Julia, and then had Amy Adams play her in the movie version of said memoir.
