The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival kicked off last week on Wednesday, April 21st, and ends on this Sunday, May 2nd. While I may have been slow to write about it, you may want to be quick to act on it, since there are only a few days left and plenty of promising and eclectic films to check out.

There’s been a huge Hollywood flavor to this year’s festival, with last Wednesday’s premiere of Shrek Forever After leading off the festivities, but otherwise the festival is as documentary-friendly, as international and as independent in spirit as ever.

Here are some of the selections I am personally most interested in:

Feathered Cocaine: Falcon drug smuggling. Sound like a crazy idea? It’s a documentary.

Get Low: A thoroughly charming and deeply affecting feature directing debut from cinematographer Aaron Schneider which stars Robert Duvall as a recluse who comes to a small Southern town to plan his own funeral party. Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek co-star. I will be covering this movie in-depth for Mapcidy closer to its release on July 30th, but I’ve seen the movie already and let me just say that it’s my favorite movie of the year as of this moment. See it the first chance you get.

The Killer Inside Me: The adventurous and versatile director Michael Winterbottom directs this noir based on the novel by pulp legend Jim Thompson (The Getaway), which stars the seriously underrated Casey Affleck and the seriously attractive Jessica Alba. This movie is already controversial for its upsetting violence, and I really don’t want to see anyone even pretend to hit Jessica Alba, but the talent involved is just too heavy to resist.

Meskada: A murder mystery starring the talented Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols as investigators into a young boy’s murder within a rural community.

Possessed: A Korean horror film about a college student who investigates the disturbing behavior of her family and neighbors after the disappearance of her sister.

Saturday Night: James Franco is a pretty lucky dude. He’s funny and talented and a bit of a movie star, and if that weren’t enough, he got backstage access at Saturday Night Live to film this documentary about all the work that goes into pulling off an episode of the most venerable and influential comedy institution of our time. Franco, SNL mastermind Lorne Michaels, and some cast members will give a talk after the screening on Sunday May 2nd.

Straight Outta L.A.: A documentary from legendary rapper Ice Cube that details the relationship between Compton’s own NWA and the Raiders (when they moved to LA from Oakland). Ice Cube has spent the last several years making comedies that are frankly toothless, but it’s impossible to forget the fire that he brought to the pop-culture scene when he first arrived, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does with a documentary addressing his formative years.

Tetsuo The Bullet Man: A Japanese sci-fi entry that looks completely insane, in a good way.

And that’s just a fraction of the fascinating films that are screening at multiple locations this week. Please visit http://www.tribecafilm.com/festival/for the complete calendar and specific showtimes.
